LOGAN HIGH SCHOOL ATTENDANCE POLICY

"Every Day Every Class Counts"

Direct Attendance Office Telephone Number: 755-2384

Dear Logan High School Parent/Guardian/Student:

The purpose of this letter is to inform you about Logan High School's recently adopted attendance policy approved by the Logan City School District Board of Education on May 27th 2008: "Every Day Every Class Counts"

GREAT NEWS! In just one school year our new attendance policy has made a significant difference in Tardies, Sluffs, and procedural methods of excusing absences! Tardies, Sluffs, and Truancies have been reduced dramatically in just one year. This translates to more uninterrupted classroom instruction. Our next task is to address the excessive excused absences. PARENTS, thank you for your on going support in helping our attendance policy make a difference. This will continue to be a "Work In Progress."

Logan High School wants to make attendance a priority! Educational research clearly indicates punctuality and accountability help your child do well in school, create meaningful study habits, and promote a necessary life skill of promptness. On average, a high school student has one to two hours of homework each night. Even one missed day can mean having to tackle three or more hours of homework the following night - practically a guarantee that students will not be doing their best work in their rush to just get through it all.

Getting to school each day on time, whether they feel like it or not, also prepares students to meet future responsibilities. Imagine, what would happen if your son or daughter regularly skipped college classes or was a frequent "no show" at a future job. The same holds true for getting to school on time. Frequent tardiness and absences are not tolerated in the workplace. Parents teach a valuable lesson when they teach the importance of arriving to school and class on time each day and committing to 92% plus attendance (No Child Left Behind).

This attendance policy is the result of months of work on the part of the LHS Logistics Team, school administration, district office personnel, Community Council, PTA, LHS faculty, LHS student body, parents and patrons. This policy is student-centered and offers consequences for truancy and tardiness that have not been previously in effect. Parents/Guardians/Students please familiarize yourselves with this policy.

Educationally yours,
