Welcome to the
Junior Year: College Planning
All year long
□ Keep up your grades! Colleges look at your
junior grades. This is no time to slack off after so much hard work.
□ Begin to take challenging courses such as Advanced
Placement and USU Concurrent Enrollment.
□ Focus on becoming a leader in a few extracurricular
activities. Run for an office, lead a team, or start your own community
service project.
□ Continue to compete in contests and competitions.
□ Get to know your favorite teachers well. Start
thinking about who you might ask to write a letter of recommendation
for you.
Fall
□ Research colleges on the Internet that interest
you.
□ Narrow the colleges you are researching to five or
ten that have what you want in courses, location, and extracurricular
activities. Look specifically at admissions requirements.
□ Talk to your parents about your college plans. (Be
sure to consider: tuition costs, location, size of college, field of
study, public or private.) Use UTAHFUTURES to gather information about
colleges.
October
□ Sign up for PSAT. The. PSAT is practice for the
SAT I and to qualify for the National Merit Scholarship competition.
□ Take the PSAT.
December
□ Review your PSAT test results with your
counselor.
January
□ Check the internet or write to colleges on your
list to inquire about admissions requirements and financial aid
procedures.
February
□ Attend SEOP conference with your counselor and
make plans for the courses you will take during your senior year. Be
sure to include challenging Advanced Placement and Concurrent
Enrollment courses.

ACT is required for colleges in Utah while the SAT is required by some
out of state schools.

□ Take the ACT at Logan High.
May
□ Take the Advanced Placement tests in the
courses/subjects you have been studying this year.
□ Register for summer school, if needed.
□ Sighn up for the June ACT at Logan High.
June
□ Take or re-take the ACT at Logan High.
Summer
□ Find a summer job, do volunteer work or attend
BATC's summer program.
□ Try to narrow your list of colleges to four or
five. Consider visiting each campus.
□ Save for college expenses.
Note: College Planning
One of the biggest mistakes that students make in planning for
college
is not starting soon enough. Don't wait until your senior year to take
tough classes. Don't wait until your senior year to become concerned
about
your grade point average. Don't wait until your senior year to get to
know
your high school counselor. Don't wait until your senior year to take
the
ACT or the SAT test. Don't wait until your senior year to decide to go
to college. Don't wait until your senior year to become aware of the
resources
in the Student Center.
