Welcome to the
Freshman Year: College Planning
All year long
□ Aim for “A”s! Set educational goals for the
year.
□ Study and work hard to get good grades! Colleges
and Universities do look at your freshman grades.
□ Get involved with school related extracurricular
activities. Find one or two clubs, sports or school organizations you
like best and get involved. Be careful not to spread yourself too thin
with too much involvement in these groups.
Fall
□ Attend Freshman orientation and Grizzly Academy.
□ Pick up your class schedule. Be sure it contains
appropriate college preparatory course work.
□ Get acquainted with your teachers and counselors at
Logan High School.
□ Research colleges on the Internet that interest
you. Look specifically at admissions requirements. You may want to
write or email these colleges for more information.
□ Participate in Group SEOP during your World
Geography course and make further plans for post-high school and career
paths.
Spring
□ Register for your Sophomore year and make a
four year plan of the courses you will take in high school.
Be sure to include challenging Advanced Placement and USU Concurrent
Enrollment courses.
□ Meet with your counselor or the student center
coordinator and ask about UTAHFUTURES.
□ Register for summer school, if appropriate.
Summer
□ Find a summer job or do volunteer work..
Note: College Planning
One of the biggest mistakes that students make in planning for
college is not starting soon enough. Don't wait until your senior year
to take tough classes. Don't wait until your senior year to become
concerned about your grade point average. Don't wait until your senior
year to get to know your high school counselor. Don't wait until your
senior year to take the ACT or the SAT test. Don't wait until your
senior year to decide to go to college. Don't wait until your senior
year to become aware of the resources in the Student Center.
