Logan vs. Ogden Cross Country

Leslie Gregory

Meeting at Logan High School’s home field, Logan’s Cross Country team prepared for their big race against Ogden. The two girl teams were tied for first in region at that time. In a sense, this race would define the best team in region.

At the start of the girls race, Ogden and Logan were pretty even throughout the first mile. Taylor Thornley took the lead for Logan as she closely followed two Ogden runners.

Mackenzie Pabst persistently followed the leading trio for the entire duration of the race.

The girl’s race was close as Thornley took third place overall and first for Logan. Pabst took fifth overall, second for Logan and Rachael Bennett took seventh overall and third for Logan. The Logan girls battled hard, but came up just short, leaving Ogden to prevail 23-32.

Ogden proved to be a good competitor for the future region race. As Logan’s girl cross country team now know what they are up against and where they need to improve, they can train hard and try to overtake Ogden should they meet up with them again.

“It was good for us to see our competition,” commented Coach IsaacReeder.

During the boy’s race, Ogden took an early lead. Daniel Olsen and Whitney Griggs battled and managed to stay up with the two leading groups of runners. As the race continued, the Ogden boys proved to be excellent pacers, causing Olsen to finish fourth overall and first for Logan.

Olsen says, “I was satisfied with my 14 second personal record, but I was disappointed that the Ogden runners started sprinting towards the end.”

Following Olsen, Griggs came in eighth overall, second for Logan and Russel Olsen claimed eleventh overall and third for Logan. Logan’s boy cross country team pushed hard, however it wasn’t quite enough to come out on top of Ogden. The final score was in Ogden’s favor.

Logan’s cross country team has a good idea on what some of their competition will be later on. Taking this race into careful consideration and with proper training Logan can have what it takes to do will at the region race.

Logan dominates over Grantsville

The Logan High girls = soccer team had an impressive game against Grantsville on Tuesday, September 11. They played confidently and shut out the Grantsville Cowboys. In the end, Logan had a total of 13 points to Grantsville's 0.

The offense of Logan High controlled the ball well against the Cowboys, but both teams hustled, working hard to chase down the ball.

Junior Rahel Beyene said, A I think we did a good job moving the ball around. We had some pretty good passes in there.

At half time, many players found the back of the net, making it 5-0. Some of the players to score were Cami Jensen, Elli Measom and Casey Voldness. Despite these goals, Grantsville' s goalie put up a great fight, blocking many shots.

Sophomore Elli Measom started out the second half with a goal in the first 5 minutes, dribbling past many of the Cowboy's defenders. Measom would go on to score one more goal, leading the team with a total of 3 points. Many of the Grizzlies had an opportunity to score during the half, which made Logan = s win a sure thing. Grantsville struggled to keep up, and the ball spent the better part of the game close to the Cowboy' s goal zone. Grantsville never even took a shot.

This game was a good confidence booster for the Grizz' s next game against Ogden on Tuesday.

The Bitter Taste of Defeat

The battle of the two undefeated 3A teams in the state quickly turned into a fiasco for the Logan Grizzlies Friday night at Crimson Field. Coming off of a thrilling victory against Sky View last week, Logan fans who were hoping to keep the momentum going were sorely disappointed in the 35-7 thumping. Judge Memorial fans couldn't have been happier.

Leading the Bulldog charge was Tyson Moll, who rushed for 94 yards and 18 of Judge's 35 points. Despite four turnovers, Moll and the Judge offense continued to chug up and down the field like a steam roller.

The Grizzlies, on the other hand, had plenty of opportunities, but could never capitalize. Held to just 161 offensive yards, with junior quarterback Jeff Manning getting 116 yards in the air, the Logan squad could never seem to find their rhythm. Every time the gears began to turn, a sack or an interception would follow, keeping the Grizz off of their stride. The only Logan points came from senior K.C. Taylor's 10 yard rush near the end of the third quarter.

While the Grizzlies had plenty of opportunities, crossing midfield seven times, the combination of bobbled passes and mental errors resulted in them only finding the end zone once, on Taylor's right end sweep.

It seemed for a moment as if the Grizz were going to stage another fairytale comeback win, until Judge got an extra boost in motivation when running back/safety Lewis Walker was injured at midfield as the third quarter wound down. Attended to for several minutes by trainers from both teams, Walker didn't move for several minutes and was eventually taken off the field on a stretcher to a waiting ambulance.

After that, there was no looking back for the Bulldogs, and little hope for the Grizz. The injury seemed to motivate Judge to put a cap on the game and take home the win. And they did just that, leaving the Grizzlies with their first loss of the season.
